Brazen liquor thefts are on the rise in Alberta. From 2018 to 2019, liquor thefts increased by 300%. With an increase in physical and threat of violence towards liquor store staff and patrons, these crimes are of serious concern.
Alcanna’s goal is to ensure the safety of our customers and team members. In response to the growing number of violent crimes, Alcanna has introduced Patronscan controlled entrances at select retail locations.
WHAT IS PATRONSCAN?
Patronscan is an I.D. verification system. Alcanna has installed Patronscan technology at the entrances of select retail locations. The entrances are locked until valid government issued I.D. is scanned. Once valid I.D. has been presented and successfully scanned, an electronic door strike will activate allowing customers entry into the store.

HOW IS MY INFORMATION USED?
Your personal information is kept in Patronscan’s secure server for 21 days. After 21 days, your information is erased unless it is required by law enforcement officials. If a crime is committed on Alcanna property, law enforcement can access the personal information of the individual who committed the crime, so long as a warrant is obtained. Alcanna employees do not have access to the personal information obtained through the Patronscan technology.

Name, Age, Gender, first 3 letters of Postal Code and the photo from the ID.

At Alcanna, we pride ourselves in the art of responsible retail. As such, there have been numerous efforts prior to this that have ultimately set the stage to controlled entrances:
Despite increased internal loss prevention measures, in-store security, and special duty policing, the rise in violent crime persists. Additional action is required to protect our staff and patrons.
PATRONSCAN PILOT PROJECT
The Patronscan pilot project was launched on January 20, 2020. Three high-theft locations in Edmonton had Patronscan technology installed to create controlled entrances. Year to date, these stores have experienced a 94% reduction in thefts, and a 100% reduction in robberies.
ARE THESE CONTROLLED ENTRANCES NECESSARY?
Safety is our main priority. Controlled entrances are necessary to effectively reduce violence in our stores. Despite our best efforts, staff members and customers have been injured during violent thefts and robberies. Controlled entrances have been proven to effectively decrease thefts and robberies, ultimately making our stores safer for our customers and team members.
HAVE CONTROLLED ENTRANCES BEEN USED ELSEWHERE?
Yes, Manitoba Liquor and Lotteries also launched a controlled entrance initiative in all liquor stores across Winnipeg. Patronscan technology has been utilized in bars and night clubs across North America for over a decade.
